Enterprise Elementary FMEP Event

Enterprise Elementary

Enterprise Elementary school  hosted a Family Literacy Engagement Program on March 14th, 2024, which was titled “Reading Makes Life Sweet.” The event was designed to show the importance of literacy in the everyday lives of students. Students came with their families and participated in several different activities related to literacy and had the chance to share cultural recipes with other families who attended. The organized hands-on activities provided ways for students and their families to engage in literacy practices.

A stamp sheet was used to document students’ progress through the activity stations. There were 10 activity stations in total, and families could transition easily from one station to the next without worry of time limits for each activity. One such station was called the “Writing Station.” At this station, families worked together with students to create the first few pages of a family journal that they would take home and continue to add to together. There was also a “DIY Station” where families participated in “How To” activities and created items such as origami, snow globes, and necklaces by following directions. At the “Reading Station,” families were given a copy of the multilingual book I Can Do Hard Things to practice self-affirmation and to share with each other.

At the end of the evening, families came together in the cafeteria and socialized while partaking in various cultural foods brought by families, with the recipe instructions placed by each cultural food item. Throughout the literacy activities, families were encouraged to share various aspects of their own personal culture.
