Springwood Elementary School
Over five weeks at Springwoods Elementary School, 28 students in grades 2–5 used sketchnoting to turn their ideas into visual stories. Led by Cohort 2 Teacher Ms. Becky Williams (an art teacher) in collaboration with Ms. Allizeah Wood (a 1st grade teacher), the multilingual learners created pages on themes such as family, daily routines, food, and favorite songs, gradually building a collection of sketches that reflected their identities and cultural backgrounds.
The final showcase was both creative and moving. Students proudly shared their work—some through detailed art designs, others through oral demonstrations. Families, teachers, and administrators gathered to celebrate their efforts, and their works also contribute to the school-wide Multicultural event held on May 15, 2025. More than an art project, Sketching Our Heritage helped students recognize the power of family and cultural heritage, showing how their lived experiences and traditions can be a source of identity, language development, and valuable funds of knowledge.
